A little over a year ago, a great book came out on the history of recording titled “Perfecting Sound Forever” by Greg Milner. It’s fabulous and it covers the concepts of the original acoustic-mechanical recordings made by Edison to today’s digital formats including CDs and mp3s. The message is straight forward, sound quality matters … it really matters! The vast amount of research, development and money spent on perfecting the recording process is eminence and the technology that has gone into rewarding the listener with convenience, even more so. So why do some production professionals settle for mediocre sound quality? Is sound less important than the picture? As my friend Howard Schwartz likes to say, “a picture without sound is just a security camera.” We agree with Howard and here’s a few topics addressing just that point.
